How Immigration Can Save Social Security

My name is Brian Doherty. I’m an author and Social Security expert, and I believe that immigration can save Social Security.

For the last 13 years, I have traveled all across the country giving my Social Security presentation to over 80,000 people. The most frequently asked question I receive is: “How much longer is Social Security going to be around, because isn’t it going broke?”

A recent survey reported that 80% of future retirees worry about Social Security running out of money, and not being able to continue making benefit payments. That’s millions of people, including the 70 million people who currently receive a Social Security check every month.

That will never happen – but Social Security does have a long-term funding issue. If nothing is done to address this funding issue, then in the year 2034, Social Security will have to cut everybody’s benefits by 22%.

Tens of millions of retirees are dependent on their Social Security for over 50% of their income in retirement, and for many of them, Social Security provides over 90% of their retirement income. A 22% cut in benefits would have a devastating effect on their quality of life, pushing millions of them into the ranks of poverty. Most of the current proposals to fix Social Security’s funding issue involve either benefit cuts, tax increases or a combination of both – and nobody likes any of those options.

A potential solution that would not include benefit cuts or tax increases would be to dramatically increase legal immigration.

Immigration is a sensitive political issue, but I am not making a political statement. There are some very compelling reasons why increasing immigration would have a positive impact on addressing Social Security’s long term funding issue. In fact, from a Social Security perspective, there are no downsides or negatives, there are only positives. If the 70 million people currently receiving a Social Security benefit don’t want to see their benefits cut by 22%, they should also be in favor of increasing immigration. I outline all of the compelling reasons why we should consider increasing legal immigration in the attached article titled: “Immigration Can Save Social Security”.

I am open to interviews to elaborate more on this idea, you can contact me by telephone or email.
